Turns out you guys might know me better than I know myself. An E60 M5 coffee cup?! It’s even the proper size cup. Must have figured I run on caffeine!

Kinja'd!!!

I’ll be using the other side of the cup as a diagram when/if I end up doing rod bearings (fingers crossed not).

Kinja'd!!!

Thank you Secret Senna, I’ll be using the shart out of this cup.

What are you thoughts on doing the rod bearings? I’ve talked to about every E9X owner I’ve met and there isn’t a consensus. My theory is that most of the failure is due to people not properly warming up their cars up.

I think your right. Mines been babied. We’ve tested the oil and all indicators are below average. Proper warm up is necessary. I even let it idle  cool down until the fans shut off

You’re welcome! Glad it turned out nice. Sorry to make you wait - LOL.

I’ve always loved these BMW engine parts photos.

Seriously makes me very glad that you do, and that it’ll get used. =)

Finding the engine photo was pretty easy (I knew it existed - there’s an S65 one that I love), but finding a good quality press photo turned out to be more of a challenge. Your car does have great lines...

Too bad I couldn’t embed an audio clip somehow - ha!

I think it’s a combination of super-tight tolerances, errors in assembly, super-heavy oil, and engines not being properly warmed.

Some users who did everything right had failures (unlucky due to assembly error ), but some users, due to the heavy oil and tight tolerances, caused the failures by going too hard too soon too often.
